Why would this be a waste of public money Bhanu? The buses run on set routes, they are going to go that way whether they have passengers or not, as do the trains. If the Pensioners were to use cars instead, not only would this result in more traffic congestion and pollution, the possiblity of more accidents from age related illnesses, or older people being too afraid to drive so they remain cooped up at home, resulting in the need for more social support and hence - state funding.

I think it makes perfect financial sense really!

Bless you!

That is wonderful!! Maybe they will set this up in every state...that would be great! I know many seniors that ride the buses around here and they are on very fixed incomes...every little bit helps! :o) XO

With most senior citizens living on a fixed income, I think it's a great idea. As we all age we develop problems with eyesight, arthritis, hearing loss and a number of other ailments, driving a car is not an option for some senior citizens.

It's a fanasti plan...The elderly not ony drive less, they go fewer places due to a lack of funds. Many elderly live at or below overty level and can afford no tranportation or entertainmen. At least a free bus ride will get them out of the house.
As said earlier, the buses run their routes, passengers or not. A few free seats won't make a difference.

Interesting points brought up...Senior citizens do need to get out to socialize, but so do disabled people. Disabled people too, live on fixed incomes and have many expenses that Medicare/Medicaid does not cover.

If the transit system allowed the disabled to ride for free, it would be a good thing......but I envision that people would abuse it........the same way they abuse the handicapped parking permit licenses. (Some people SHOULD walk further from their cars to the stores, and yet they beg their doctors for a handicapped parking tag, and almost brag about it! humpf!) No, make the disabled pay. Make the senior citizens pay something. Even 1/4 fare. That's fair.
